Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to drive vehicles safely, including the systematic and safe control of all vehicles' functions and the management of hazardous situations under operational conditions.The unit is applicable to public safety personnel who are required to operate vehicles both on and off road during public safety operations.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Drive the vehicle
  • Vehicle is prepared for and is safely operated in terrain suitable to the vehicle
  • Vehicles and/or trailers are operated and positioned, in accordance with organisational policies and procedures to ensure safe operation and traffic regulations
  • Low risk driving techniques are used, in accordance with organisational policies and procedures, to minimise the likelihood of injury to persons or damage to equipment or property
       
Element: Prepare vehicle for operational response
  • Vehicle is selected to meet operational requirements and is suitable for use in operational terrain
       
Element: Preliminary check of the vehicle is completed to ensure it is operational
       
Element: Equipment and accessories are checked to ensure they are available and are operational
       
Element: Cabin drill and start up checks are completed, in accordance with organisational procedures and operational standards
       
Element: Engine is started, in accordance with manufacturers' specifications
       
Element: Audible and visual warning systems are checked to ensure that they are all operational
  • Vehicle is prepared for and is safely operated in terrain suitable to the vehicle
       
Element: Vehicles and/or trailers are operated and positioned, in accordance with organisational policies and procedures to ensure safe operation and traffic regulations
       
Element: Low risk driving techniques are used, in accordance with organisational policies and procedures, to minimise the likelihood of injury to persons or damage to equipment or property
       
Element: Monitor traffic, road and terrain under operational conditions
  • Vehicle movement is controlled in response to external conditions to ensure safety of persons
       
Element: Most efficient route for travel is taken including monitoring factors likely to cause delays or deviations
       
Element: Traffic and surface conditions are consistently monitored and acted upon to enable safe operation and to ensure no injury to people or damage to property, equipment, loads and/or facilities

Assessment Tasks
